Lumineers Q & A

What are Lumineers?

Lumineers are thin shells of porcelain that fit over the surface of your teeth to change their shape, size, length, or color. Like traditional veneers, Lumineers bond to your teeth to cover imperfections, such as chipped teeth or severe tooth discoloration, but they’re much thinner.

Because they’re thin and lightweight, Lumineers require little to no reduction of your natural tooth enamel, eliminating the need for temporary veneers. This means Lumineers, which can often be placed in one visit, don’t change the natural structure of your teeth.

How can Lumineers improve my smile?

Lumineers fit over your teeth to cover a variety of imperfections or dental concerns, such as:

  • Chipped teeth
  • Cracked or broken teeth
  • Teeth worn down by grinding (bruxism)
  • Misshapen teeth
  • Severe tooth discoloration
  • Gaps in teeth

If you’ve been dreaming of a traditional Hollywood smile, Lumineers can help your teeth look more polished and uniform.

What are the benefits of Lumineers?

When compared to traditional porcelain veneers, Lumineers offer a number of advantages, including:

Size

Traditional veneers are generally thicker than Lumineers, so Dr. Nusblatt has to remove a portion of your healthy tooth structure to help them blend in with the rest of your teeth. Lumineers are ultra-thin (about as thin as a contact lens), so very little tooth structure needs to be removed when they’re placed.

Time

During the traditional veneer process, Dr. Nusblatt prepares your tooth by removing a portion of the enamel and takes impressions to create your custom-made veneer. While you wait for the veneer, which takes about two weeks, you must wear temporary veneers. Because the Lumineers process is minimally invasive, you won’t have to wear temporary veneers.

Reversible

If you want to remove your custom-made Lumineers for any reason, you can. Lumineers don’t damage your healthy tooth structure in the same way that traditional veneers do, so the treatment is reversible.

What can I expect from the Lumineers process?

During your first visit, Dr. Nusblatt takes impressions of your teeth to create a mold for your Lumineers. In many cases, your teeth will need very little preparation to make room for the Lumineers. Before you leave the office, Dr. Nusblatt will also choose the shade that looks best with the rest of your teeth.

Dr. Nusblatt checks the shade, fit, and size of your Lumineers at your second visit to ensure they look perfect. Finally, he uses a special adhesive to bond them to the surface of your teeth.
