New Year, New Smile: 7 Resolutions for a Healthier Mouth

: Germs have a bad reputation, and too often we focus only on the ones that make you feel miserable with illnesses. However, we have trillions of microbes in our bodies that help us in numerous ways, known as our microbiome. This vast collection of microorganisms supports most aspects of your health and is vital in digestion, both in the mouth and stomach.

The oral microbiome helps keep your mouth healthy, but many factors allow harmful bacteria to enter and cause disease. What we eat is a big part of this, and this year it’s time to get serious about your dental health. Let’s take a closer look at how what we eat affects our oral health, and see if all the holiday feasting may have done more harm than good.

Dr. Adam Nusblatt and the team at Nusblatt Dental hope everyone in the East Village area of Manhattan, New York, enjoyed their holiday and are more than willing to help you manage your dental needs moving forward.

How our diet affects oral health

If you enjoyed the excellent food from your holiday feasting, be aware that many of the choices on the menu likely contribute to damaging your teeth, including:

Long-term effects of bad oral health

Between the harmful foods we eat and poor oral hygiene, dental infections worsen over time, leading to tooth cracking and chipping, tooth loss, and various forms of gum disease, including gingivitis and periodontal disease. Left untreated, the damage spreads throughout the body since your mouth is the starting point for the digestive system.

Eventually, the infection formed in your mouth from gum disease and other dental issues may lead to cardiovascular diseases such as coronary artery disease, clogged arteries (atherosclerosis), and a higher risk of having a stroke.

How to keep your mouth healthier

Let’s try to ring in the new year the right way for your teeth by trying these tips:

  1. Practice daily proper hygiene, with brushing twice and flossing at least once each day
  2. Brush in circular motions on teeth for at least two minutes, and brush your tongue
  3. Always use fluoride toothpaste
  4. Use mouthwash after eating, but not after brushing teeth
  5. Stay hydrated to clean out your mouth
  6. Reduce harmful foods in your diet, like those high in starch, sugars, and acids
  7. Make regular trips to your dentist for check-ups

Start the year off right with some proper care for your teeth and by modifying your diet to protect them. For questions and concerns about how to start off right and assess your dental health, make an appointment with Dr. Nusblatt and the Nusblatt Dental team today.
